MUSTANGS OUR HISTORY
In July 1991, Brandon Park in Wollongong hosted an exhibition game of American College Football between Arizona College and Idaho College, drawing a crowd of 8,000. Inspired by the enthusiasm surrounding the event and the growing popularity of the sport on television, a group of South Coast players, formerly with the Sutherland Seahawks, set out to establish a gridiron club in Wollongong.
Recruitment began in September 1991, attracting around 80 interested players to an initial information meeting. Over the following weeks, a committed group of approximately 30 players emerged, ready to take on the challenges of a demanding sport. While some were initially captivated by the appeal of the uniforms and the glamour of gridiron, they soon discovered the dedication, costs, and effort required to play at a competitive level.
The founding coaching staff included seasoned players from the Seahawks: Hugh VCortez, John Boss, Zoran Janevski, and brothers Ben and Paul Curcio. With John Boss’ connection to Wollongong TAFE, the team secured a training base and equipment storage, a key step in bringing their vision to life.
Efforts to secure sponsorship initially explored various avenues, including a proposal to a local soft drink supplier that might have seen the team named "The Pepsi Patriots." While this did not materialize, significant support came from McDonald's and the North Wollongong Hotel. With funding in place and favorable US dollar exchange rates, the team purchased much needed equipment. The club adopted Cardinal Red and Gold as its official colors, reflecting McDonald’s sponsorship, and players voted almost unanimously to name the team the Wollongong Mustangs.
Promotion became a crucial focus for the new club. The Mustangs actively engaged with the community, participating in shopping center events, McDonald's McHappy Days, and even running mini fun runs in full playing gear to raise awareness and share their love for gridiron.
Now over 30 years old, the Wollongong Mustangs have built a proud legacy as one of the region’s foundational gridiron clubs.
